Bedside Ultrasound Program
Intensive Bedside Ultrasound Training Program for Neonatologists
This new Bedside Ultrasound Training Program for neonatologists is offered through the Neonatal Research Institute (NRI) at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns.
A multi-week, on-site training course, the program consists of both didactics and hands-on instruction. The course is designed to cover both theoretical and practical ultrasound techniques for neonatologists.
Housing is available nearby at a discounted rate, and meals will be provided during the lectures.
Course objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Perform safe and accurate basic echocardiographic examinations
- Integrate ultrasound into advanced life support protocol
- Demonstrate proficient image acquisition and optimization, utilizing all standard views
- Recognize diagnostic limitations and situations when a referral for a second opinion is indicated
- Identify cardiovascular pathology, necessitating immediate cardiac consultation and additional cardiac ultrasound
- Recognize normal cardiac anatomy, physiology and the anatomical relationship of the heart to surrounding organs and structures
Course content
All courses will be conducted in the following manner:
- A pre-test
- Eight hours practical teaching
- Reference material covering course
- Live scanning sessions
- A post-test
Modules for lung, abdomen and head available as part of the curriculum.
Lecture topics
Lecture topics will include:
- An overview of the mechanics and principles of ultrasound
- Common pitfalls in performing cardiac ultrasound
- Normal cardiac anatomy and echocardiographic views
- Red flags of congenital heart disease
- Assessment of flows (RVO, LVO, SVC)
- How to measure shunts (PDA/atrial)
- Assessment of cardiac function and PPHN
- What to do when you have a PDA (assessment of significance)
