What is nuclear medicine?
Nuclear medicine is a diagnostic imaging technology which utilizes small amounts of radioactive tracers called radioisotopes. The radioisotopes are injected intravenously by Sharp Rees-Stealy's licensed nuclear medicine technologists and allow anatomical imaging. The radioisotopes are nonallergenic, nontoxic and different from the dyes or contrast agents used in CT scans, X-rays and MRIs and cause no side or after effects. The radiation is low and the radioactivity disappears from the body within days.
At Sharp Rees-Stealy's Nuclear Medicine Department the majority of exams involve noninvasive imaging of the heart. Noncardiac imaging of the skeleton, kidneys, lungs, gall bladder, parathyroid, thyroid and stomach are also performed. Most exams have a time interval of several hours between injection and scan, but patients may leave the clinic during the interval if they desire. The resultant images are called nuclear medicine scans which are interpreted by specially trained physicians. Results are generally available to the physician who made the patient referral within one week of the exam, unless special arrangements have been made.
