Robotic Surgery
Robotic Surgery in San Diego
A less invasive surgery to get you back to your daily life.
As a leader in robotic-assisted surgery, our team of experienced robotic surgeons have completed more robotic-assisted procedures than any other health care system in San Diego. Benefits of robotic-assisted surgery include a shorter hospital stay, less pain after surgery, and lower rates of complications.
We treat a variety of conditions with robotic surgery. To determine if robotic-assisted surgery is the right treatment path for you, talk with your doctor about whether surgery is appropriate for your situation. You should always ask your surgeon about their training, experience and patient outcomes.

Frequently asked questions about robotic-assisted surgery.
How does robotic-assisted surgery work?
Robotic technology is a high-tech extension of your surgeon, who is still in full control of everything that happens during the surgery. The robotic technology moves like the human wrist and allows for surgeons to perform the surgery using smaller instruments in a more precise and steady movement. With zooming capabilities, the incision is 1 to 2 cm, compared to traditional open surgery, where the surgeon must make an incision large enough to fit the surgical instruments and see the area.
How does the robotic surgeon see what they are doing?
There is a camera inside your body, which sends real-time images to your surgeon, who is operating the robot from a console. These images are highly magnified with a sharper resolution, giving your surgeon a better view than what they would see standing over you.
What are the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery?
Your surgery will result in smaller incisions. which will allow for:
- A shorter hospital stay
- Less risk of infection
- Less blood loss and fewer blood transfusions
- Less pain
- Less scarring
- Faster recovery
- A quicker return to daily routine
What conditions can be treated with robotic surgery?
Our surgical teams use robotic-assisted technology for:
- Abdominal surgery
- Head and neck surgery
- Gallbladder surgery
- Gynecologic surgery
- Heart surgery
- Hernia repair
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Partial and total knee replacement
- Thoracic surgery
- Total hip replacement
- Urologic surgery
- Weight loss surgery
Can any doctor perform robotic surgery?
Any doctor can be successfully trained in operating a robotic surgical system. Meet our doctors with Center of Excellence designation for robotic surgery.
How do I know if robotic surgery is right for me?
Robotic surgery or another type of minimally invasive surgical procedure is not for everyone. Our doctors work closely with their patients to discuss options and help them decide on the best treatments.
Is robotic surgery an option for general surgery procedures?
Our skilled general surgeons have access to the da Vinci® X and Xi robotic surgical systems. Optimized for certain types of surgeries — including gallbladder, abdominal, laparoscopic and hernia repair — the da Vinci systems use very small incisions where a tiny camera and surgical instruments are placed. The robotic arms replicate the movements of the surgeon's hands, but with a greater range of motion.
Is robotic surgery an option for joint replacement surgery?
Sharp Coronado Hospital and Sharp Grossmont Hospital offer Mako® robotic-arm assisted technology. Available for partial and total knee and hip replacement surgeries, this technology uses 3D modeling to help your doctor create a personalized surgical plan and allows for precise placement of the implant while preserving healthy bone, tissue and ligaments.
